Newcastle Church is located on Church Lane in the townland of Newcastle Middle, approximately 600 metres west of the village of Newcastle and 3km south-east of the village of Newtownmountkennedy. The church serves as the parish centre for the Parish of Newcastle and Newtownmountkennedy with Calary.
History
The first church to be built on the present site of Newcastle Church was a Catholic Church in 1189. This church would become known as St Catherine’s during the 15th century. The exact number of years this church stood for is unknown, although it was reported destroyed in 1641.
Another church began construction on the same site in 1697 and wasn’t completed until 1722, some 25 years later. This church did not last long, and was completely rebuilt between 1783 and 1788, with its tower being completed in 1821. This is the present church that stands today.
St Catherine’s
Newcastle Church was the second of three churches to use the St Catherine’s name in the Greater Newtownmountkennedy Area. The church inherited the St Catherine’s name from Killadreenan Church after it fell into disue during the 15th century. As a result of the Irish Reformation, the St Catherine’s name was passed to Kilmurry Church after the church in Newcastle was acquired by the Anglican Church.
