Newtownmountkennedy’s political history is as interesting as the history of the village itself. Traditionally a working class village, Newtownmountkennedy often votes heavily for left of centre parties. The Labour Party and Fianna Fáil (when they were left of centre economically) were previously very strong in the village.
However, recently as both parties have moved away from their traditionally working class bases, another left of centre party, Sinn Féin, has become the most popular party in Newtownmountkennedy.
Interestingly, there has also been a rise in the vote the vote for the right wing Fine Gael in Newtownmountkennedy. Reasons for this may be down to the increase in development in the village, as new people moving into estates such as Wicklow Hills tend to be more conservative than the established residents (or so the data shows).
